Experience
For two and a half years, I was the primary writing tutor at Freudigman and Billings in Westport. My specialty was tutoring high school students working on college application essays, but I also taught general writing skills to high school students. For another year and a half, I have tutored on a free-lance basis. I have published ten books, the most recent being 1920: The Year That Made the Decade Roar. On February 15, 2016, my eleventh book will be released: The Golden Lad: The Haunting Story of Theodore and Quentin Roosevelt. Two of my books have won the American Library Association's highest award, being named the "Best of the Best." For another book, Infamous Scribblers: The Founding Fathers and the Rowdy Beginnings of American Journalism, I appeared on The Daily Show and was interviewed by Jon Stewart. The interview remains online. I spent most of my vocational life as a television journalist, appearing on NBC Nightly News, the Today Show, CNN, PBS and Fox. In the February, 1984 issue of the Washington Journalism Review (now the American Journalism Review), I was named one of the best writers in the history of broadcast news, joining such luminaries as Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite and Charles Kuralt. I have also won an Emmy for writing TV news commentary. The only play I have written, called Mid-Strut, had its World Premiere at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and won the Eudora Welty Emerging Playwrights Competition.
